A burst water line can turn a quiet winter storage visit into a costly repair bill fast. Whether your RV is parked in Florida for the season or headed north for winter travel, knowing how to winterize RV plumbing protects the systems that keep your rig comfortable and road-ready.
Freezing water expands. That expansion can crack plastic fittings, split PEX lines, damage a water pump, and ruin a water heater. The trouble is that the damage may not show up until spring, when you reconnect to city water and find a leak behind a cabinet or beneath the floor. A few careful hours before temperatures drop can save a service appointment, lost travel time, and a whole lot of frustration.
When Does an RV Need Winterizing?
If your RV will experience temperatures at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours, winterize the plumbing system. A brief cold snap is not always enough to freeze every line, especially in a heated RV, but it is not worth guessing when your coach is sitting unattended.
Florida RV owners may not need a full winterization every year. Still, a hard freeze can reach the Tampa Bay area, and many local RVers store their units in colder states or travel north for the holidays. If you are leaving your RV in storage, not using it regularly, or cannot keep the interior and wet bay reliably heated, full winterization is the safer choice.
There are two common methods: pumping RV antifreeze through the plumbing lines or blowing water out with compressed air. Antifreeze is generally the more forgiving option because it protects low spots where water can remain. Compressed air can work well, but it requires the right pressure and a careful second pass through every fixture. Many owners use both methods for added peace of mind.
What You Need Before You Start
Gather your supplies before draining anything. You will need RV and marine antifreeze labeled non-toxic, usually two to four gallons depending on your RV layout. You will also need a water heater bypass kit if your coach does not already have one, a hand tool for drain plugs, and a sewer hose or approved dump connection.
If you plan to use compressed air, use an air compressor with a regulator and an RV blowout plug. Never send high-pressure shop air into your RV plumbing. Keep the pressure around 30 to 40 PSI. More pressure does not mean better protection – it can damage fittings and create the very repair problem you are trying to avoid.
Before beginning, turn off the water heater and let it cool completely. Never drain a hot water heater. Switch off the water pump, disconnect city water, and turn off any ice maker or water filtration system if your RV has them.
How to Winterize RV Plumbing Step by Step
Start by emptying the fresh water system. Drain and flush your black and gray tanks at an approved dump station, then rinse them as needed. Leaving waste in the tanks all winter creates odors and makes spring cleanup much harder.
Next, drain the fresh water tank. Most RVs have a low-point drain for the hot and cold plumbing lines, along with a separate fresh tank drain. Open all three if your rig has them. Then open the kitchen faucet, bathroom sink, shower, and outside shower faucets to help air move through the system. Do not forget the toilet valve. Water can hide in places that are easy to overlook.
Drain and Bypass the Water Heater
With the water heater cool and depressurized, remove its drain plug or anode rod. Open the pressure-relief valve briefly to help it drain. Inspect the anode rod while it is out. If it is heavily corroded, replacing it now is a simple maintenance win before next season.
Once the tank is empty, set the water heater bypass valves. This is a critical step. You do not want to fill a six- or 10-gallon water heater with antifreeze. The bypass directs antifreeze around the tank while still protecting the hot water lines.
If your RV does not have a bypass kit, it is worth installing one. It reduces antifreeze use and makes annual winterizing much easier.
Protect the Lines With RV Antifreeze
Close the low-point drains after the system has drained. Then connect your water pump to the RV antifreeze supply using the winterizing hose or pump conversion kit. Turn on the pump and begin with the fixture farthest from the pump.
Open the cold side of the faucet until you see solid pink antifreeze, then close it and repeat on the hot side. Work through every water outlet in the RV: kitchen faucet, bathroom sink, shower, exterior shower, toilet, and any bar sink or washer hookup. Run the toilet until pink antifreeze reaches the bowl.
Pay close attention to less obvious fixtures. If your RV has a washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator water dispenser, ice maker, outdoor kitchen, or water filter, follow the manufacturer instructions for winterizing those components. Some appliances need a separate process, and skipping them can lead to expensive surprises.
After every line runs pink, pour about a cup of antifreeze into each sink and shower drain. This fills the P-traps, which normally hold water and can freeze. Add some to the toilet bowl as well, both to protect the seal and keep it from drying out during storage.
If You Prefer the Compressed-Air Method
Blowing out the system saves antifreeze and can be convenient for RVers who winterize more than once a season. After draining the tanks and water heater, close the drains and attach a regulated air source to the city water inlet with a blowout plug.
Open one fixture at a time, starting with the farthest point in the plumbing system. Run the hot and cold sides until only air comes out, then move to the next fixture. Cycle the toilet valve and outside shower too. Repeat the entire process once more because water often settles into low spots after the first pass.
Even when using air, pour RV antifreeze into every drain trap and toilet bowl. Air will not protect those traps from freezing. For most owners, antifreeze through the supply lines remains the simpler and more dependable method, especially if the RV will be parked for months.
Do Not Forget These Common Trouble Spots
Winterization failures often come from one missed component rather than the main plumbing lines. Before closing up the RV, check these areas:
- The exterior shower, including both hot and cold knobs
- The black tank flush connection, if your RV has one
- The water pump strainer and any inline water filters
- The refrigerator ice maker or water dispenser
- The washer, dishwasher, or utility sink connections
- The low-point drains and fresh water tank drain
Remove and store water filters if the manufacturer recommends it. A frozen filter housing can crack even when the rest of the system is protected. If you have a tankless water heater, follow its specific winterization requirements rather than assuming the standard bypass procedure applies.
Final Checks Before RV Storage
Once the system is winterized, turn off the water pump and make sure all faucets are closed. Leave cabinet doors open if your RV will be stored in cold weather. This allows warmer interior air to reach plumbing routed behind cabinets.
If you are relying on electric heat rather than fully winterizing, use caution. A power outage, tripped breaker, empty propane tank, or failed space heater can leave your plumbing unprotected. Heat is useful while you are actively using the RV, but winterization is the better long-term plan for unattended storage.
