You pull into a campground after a long Florida drive, connect to shore power, and expect the air conditioner to cool things down. Instead, a bad pedestal, low voltage, or wiring fault can put expensive RV electronics at risk before you have even finished setting up camp. RV surge protectors are one of the simplest ways to protect your coach from problems that start outside your RV.
They are not a cure-all, and they cannot repair damaged campground wiring. What they can do is give you a warning before power reaches your rig, and in many cases, cut power when voltage becomes unsafe. That small step can help protect appliances, chargers, control boards, and the electrical systems you depend on.
What RV Surge Protectors Actually Do
Despite the name, a quality RV surge protector does more than respond to a single electrical surge. Basic models absorb or sacrifice themselves to help protect equipment during a spike in voltage. More advanced electrical management systems, often called EMS units, continuously monitor the power coming from the campground pedestal.
Depending on the model, an EMS-style protector may check for high or low voltage, reverse polarity, an open ground, an open neutral, incorrect wiring, and frequency problems. If it sees an unsafe condition, it keeps power from reaching the RV or disconnects power until the condition clears.
That matters because campground power is not always predictable. Pedestals endure heat, rain, corrosion, frequent use, and occasional damage. How to Use an RV Surge Protector at the Campground
A good setup routine takes only a few extra minutes. First, inspect the pedestal before connecting. Look for cracked plastic, burn marks, loose outlets, water intrusion, or signs that the receptacle has overheated. If the pedestal looks questionable, do not plug in and hope for the best. Ask campground staff for another site or a maintenance check.

A Surge Protector Is Not a Substitute for Maintenance
RV surge protectors protect against bad incoming shore power. They do not fix an aging shore cord, a loose RV inlet, a failing transfer switch, corroded battery connections, or a damaged converter. They also cannot protect a system that has been incorrectly modified or overloaded.
If you smell hot plastic, see melted plug blades, lose power intermittently, hear buzzing from an electrical panel, or notice breakers tripping repeatedly, stop using the affected connection.
